Play971 After the World Cup: What the Data Showed, and Why Cricket Is Next
Play971 says 49% of World Cup final predictions were live. Now it turns to the Abu Dhabi T10 and ILT20, with dates, and why Dubai matches are a problem.

Last updated: 20 October 2026
On 9 October, Play971 gave The National its review of the FIFA World Cup, its first major tournament as the UAE's only licensed sportsbook. It released no turnover or player numbers. It did say that Morocco drove the biggest jump in engagement, that Kylian Mbappé was the most-backed goalscorer, and that 49 per cent of predictions during the final were placed in-play. The operator now says cricket is its "natural focus". The Abu Dhabi T10 runs from 7 to 20 November and the DP World ILT20 from 21 November to 20 December. There is a catch: Dubai hosts more ILT20 matches than any other emirate (15 of 34), including the opener and the final, and Play971 has been reported as unavailable there.
Key takeaways
- The headline numbers: Play971 told The National that 49 per cent of predictions during the World Cup final were placed live. It also said Morocco's run produced its largest increase in player engagement and that Mbappé was the most-backed scorer.
- No hard figures. The operator reported "strong and sustained growth" in registrations and active players, but disclosed no player counts, stakes or revenue.
- Next up is cricket. The Abu Dhabi T10 runs from 7 to 20 November at Zayed Cricket Stadium. ILT20 Season 5 follows from 21 November to 20 December across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
- The Dubai problem. On Gulf News' fixture count, 15 of the 34 ILT20 matches are in Dubai, including the opener and the final. Khaleej Times reported in June that Play971 could not be accessed from Dubai, and we have found no report that this has changed.
- The rules have not changed: 21+, an Emirates ID, physically in the UAE, outside any GCGRA "sensitive geographic area". Betting on cricket through any other site is illegal.
What did Play971 learn from the World Cup?
Play971 launched football betting in early June 2026, days before the tournament began. Four months later, Philippa Bowland, its commercial director for iGaming, gave The National a post-tournament review. "The response has validated everything we set out to do," she said.
She cited four things:
- Morocco. One of a record eight Arab-world teams at the 48-team finals, Morocco reached the quarter-finals before losing to France. Bowland called them "our biggest underdog story, attracting the largest increase in player engagement".
- Mbappé. He was the "most-backed goalscorer overall".
- Live betting. "Nearly half [49%] of all predictions during the final" were "placed live as the action unfolded".
- Big-name fixtures. Matches involving Portugal, Brazil, England, Spain and Belgium drew the most engagement, and France v Spain drew the most individual predictions.
Only one of these is a hard number: 49 per cent. It is a share, not a volume, and covers one match. It says that in a market where legal betting was weeks old, about half of the final's predictions were made after kick-off rather than before it. None of it shows how many people use Play971 or how much they stake. The operator has not published those figures, and we are not going to estimate them.
Why is Play971 turning to cricket?
Bowland told The National cricket is "a natural focus". The UAE's big South Asian population is the obvious reason, and Play971 already has a cricket face. In June it named former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, who lives in the UAE, as its first brand ambassador. Campaign Middle East's report of the signing linked it to the country's cricket fan base and its "local T10 and T20 competitions".
The National named the DP World ILT20's calendar as a content pipeline, and noted that ILT20 and the Abu Dhabi T10 fall back-to-back in November. Neither Play971 nor The National has said which markets will be offered on either tournament, so check the sportsbook rather than assume every match is priced.
When are the Abu Dhabi T10 and ILT20 2026?
The dates, checked against the organisers and the fixture releases:
Tournament — Dates — Venues — Format
- Abu Dhabi T10 — 7–20 Nov 2026 — Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi — Six teams
- DP World ILT20 Season 5 — 21 Nov–20 Dec 2026 — Dubai International Stadium, Zayed Cricket Stadium, Sharjah Cricket Stadium — Six teams, 34 matches
Abu Dhabi T10. The tournament site lists 7 to 20 November 2026 at Zayed Cricket Stadium. The six teams are Arabian Aces, Emirates Eagles, Royal Desert Champions, UAE Bulls, United Tigers and Yas Lions. According to The National, the Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub (ADCSH) now fully owns the competition, and UAE Bulls are the title holders.
ILT20 Season 5. The league first announced a 22 November start. When the full fixture list came out on 7 October, it moved the opener forward a day: Desert Vipers v MI Emirates on Saturday 21 November at 6:30pm, at Dubai International Stadium. According to Gulf News, the league phase has 30 matches and there are four play-off games:
- Qualifier 1: 16 December, Abu Dhabi
- Eliminator: 17 December, Dubai
- Qualifier 2: 18 December, Sharjah
- Final: Sunday 20 December at 6:30pm, Dubai
Dubai hosts 15 matches, Abu Dhabi 11 and Sharjah 8.
The T10 ends on 20 November and the ILT20 opener is on 21 November, the next day. For an operator, that means more than six weeks of almost daily cricket inside the UAE.
Can you bet on ILT20 matches in Dubai?
Not through Play971, on the most recent reporting. In June, Khaleej Times confirmed that access was blocked from Dubai and that the site told Dubai users access "is not available in Dubai or outside the UAE". Bowland said availability "is determined at the emirate level". The National's October piece lists the conditions as being 21 or over, physically in the UAE, and not in a "sensitive geographic area" as determined by the GCGRA. It did not say whether Dubai had been switched on, and we have found no report that it has.
That matters more for cricket than it did for the World Cup, which was played in North America. Here the venues themselves are split:
- The whole T10 is at Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, where Play971 was confirmed to work.
- The largest share of ILT20 (15 of 34 matches), including the opener, the eliminator and the final, is at Dubai International Stadium. A fan in the stands there is in Dubai, and the platform's location check uses the phone's precise position, not where the account holder lives.
- Matches in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi fall in emirates where access was confirmed.
We saw the same split when we looked at whether you can bet on the Dubai World Cup: Meydan is in Dubai too. Using a VPN or proxy to get round the check breaches Play971's rules and can void winnings. Play971 location checks explained sets out how the check works.
What protections apply?
The National reports that age and identity are verified before anyone can play, and that player controls include deposit limits and timeouts. Bowland said player protection is "central to the experience, not an afterthought". Gulf News' guide to the platform adds self-exclusion for at least six months and referrals to Takalam for counselling. A six-week run of daily cricket is exactly when those limits are worth setting, before the first ball rather than after a bad night. Our Play971 responsible gaming explainer covers the tools.
Everything outside Play971 is still unlicensed. Offshore cricket betting apps and sites taking bets from the UAE are illegal, whatever odds they offer. Illegal gaming risks in the UAE explains what is at stake.
